Exterior Painting: Protect and Preserve
Home exterior painting, also known as residential exterior painting, is a great way to not only enhance the outer beauty of your home, but it is also a great way to protect your home from many damaging conditions that can weaken or even destroy the materials that make up your home. As a public service, Danieli Painting would like to share some important information with you about exterior painting that you may not know.
While this post is mainly focused on exterior home painting, the information here also applies to commercial exterior painting. Both types of structures, residences and business places, are constructed using the same types of materials in many cases. So what applies to one will often apply to the other.
As you know, the exterior of any type of building will be exposed to a variety of weather conditions. Living in the northeast often means harsh, frigid winters followed by sunny, warm summers. And it is not uncommon to have plenty of driving rain and strong winds in-between. All of these weather conditions can play havoc on your home's exterior.
Living in and around the greater Boston area means you need to be alert to two major issues as they pertain to your home. One issue is moisture, and the other is expansion/contraction.
If the paint on your home is cracked, peeling, or falling off, then moisture from rain and even fog is certainly getting to the building material beneath the paint. If this material is wood or a wood composite, this moisture will begin to swell, decay, or destroy the material, resulting in very expensive repairs. If the material is metal then rusting is inevitable.
The issue of expansion and contraction has to do with the building itself expanding and contracting as temperatures change with the seasons. This movement will often result in the exterior paint cracking. At first, this may look like spider-web cracks, but over time it can become a severe problem as the paint begins to peel away and fall off. Modern paints are formulated to address this problem and will "breathe" with the home's movement, resulting in less damage to the paint surface.
In order for your home exterior painting project to be successful, several steps have to be taken. Simply putting new paint over old paint will not serve you very well at all. Surface preparation, sanding, filling nail holes, sealing cracks, these are all part of an important process that allows you to get the most out of your paint and your investment.
